Ship Accidents During the Korean War in 1955

January 22, 1955  

USS Atka (AGB-3) helicopter pilot Lt. John P. Moore was killed in a helicopter crash at Kainan Bay near Little America, Antarctica during white-out conditions.

Moore, Ltjg. John Pinkney was a son of Pinkney Hardy Moore (1885-1980) and Effie Ethel Bryant Moore (1887-1957).  His siblings included Alma W. Moore Leonard (1909-1940), Roy B. Moore (1912-1931), John Hardy Moore (1914-1979), Otis Finley Moore (1915-1984), Rufus Hughes Moore (1917-2003) and Shelby Ray Moore (1920-1972).  Lieutenant Moore is buried in the G.W. Moore Cemetery, Collettsville, North Carolina. 

 

February 20, 1955

A battery explosion in the submarine USS Pomodon (SS-486) at the San Francisco Naval Yard resulted in five deaths and six injuries.  A fire in the forward section began after a build-up of hydrogen gas caused an explosion. Other explosions followed.  Included in the six injured were Lt. Lloyd R. White, Bobby Douglas Pulliam, and Carlin Joe Cobb.

Fatalities:

Barckhoff, Chief Carl Donald - Born June 11, 1925, in Ohio, he was the son of Carl H. and Martha L. Davis Barckhoff, and the husband of Alberta Ernestine Zmoos (later Evans) (1921-2007). He is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, California.

Bowman, Torpedoman's Mate 3C Charles Bartlett - Born June 12, 1934, he was the son of Joseph B. Bowman (1890-1944) and Laura Bowman (1899-1980). He is buried in Laurel Memorial Park and Cremator, Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

Hackett, Ltjg. JohnJoseph - Born April 01, 1928, he is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego.

Mattson, Torpedoman 3/C Charles Chester - Born June 13, 1933 in Red Lodge, Montana, he was a graduate of Ronan High School.  He died while giving aid to men injured in the first of three explosions on the submarine.  He is buried in Ronan Cemetery, Ronan, Montana.  

Woods, William Joel - Born February 11, 1935, he was the son of Hercil and Georgia Woods.  He was a former Cleveland High School student.  He is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis County, Missouri.
