Riding in a jeep near a bridge spanning the river when he heard a struggling man cry for help, Sergeant Knight quickly leaped from his vehicle and dived fully clothed into the cold water. Fighting the swirling currents, he succeeded in reaching his drowning comrade and proceeded to tow him through the perilous water toward the bridge where others were launching a boat to assist in the rescue. Although pulled below the surface of the water many times by the panic-stricken man, he continued to keep him afloat until the arrival of the rescue boat.
